Ben Sahl, Principal Author Ben has advocated for expanding opportunities for integrated community living for individuals with developmental disabilities since 2012. He has testified on residential development before New York State legislators, was a founding member and counsel to the NYC Family Information & Support Network, and served on the Residential Services Committee of the Board of AHRC – New York City, the Manhattan Developmental Disabilities Council, the New York City Family Support Services Advisory Council, the Advisory Board of the New York Deaf-Blind Collaborative, the New York City Bar Disability Law Committee, the New Hampshire Developmental Services Quality Council the National Family Association for the Deaf-Blind, and the National Consortium on Deaf-Blindness. He has represented disabled individuals denied housing rights, and a national housing rights organization, in federal litigation in New York. He served as the legal director of the Disability Rights Center – New Hampshire.
While raising a daughter with severe sensory, motor, and developmental disabilities, Ben maintains an active civil litigation docket in state and federal court in New York. Ben is a graduate of Columbia University (Woolrich Writing Fellow), where he taught writing and performance for over a decade; Indiana University (Playwriting Fellow), where he also taught; and UCLA Law (Editor, UCLA Law Review). Ben’s plays have been published and produced in the U.S., U.K., and Australia. Born in Spain and raised on New York’s Lower East Side, Ben lives with his wife and daughter in southern New Hampshire, where they enjoy horseback riding, yoga, and the Granite State’s beautiful accessible trails. |
